Sugar, when consumed, has the ability to alter the dopamine receptors in the brain giving you the feeling of pleasure. The more sugar taken in, the more these pleasure centers are going to react. In turn, your body is going to want more and more of these unhealthy foods and drinks.

So how to curb sugar cravings?

Here are 10 tips and tricks, you can employ to avoid those cravings and manage your sugar intake better.

1 Don´t let yourself get too hungry

The easiest way to fight off a craving is by avoiding it all together. One way to do this is by keeping yourself from getting overly hungry.

If you start to feel like you need something to eat, fill up with a good fat or protein from the list of foods on the Paleo diet. By eating something of quality, the craving will most likely disappear.

Be sure to take advantage of the Paleo starches that are allowed and eat them as frequently as you need to in order to curb the thought that you want something in the junk food category like a pretzel or chips.

2 Distraction
The moment you start to feel a craving kicking in, do something else. Listen to music, go talk to a friend, clean, work on a project, take a nap, read, anything that will get your mind off of eating.

Find a Replacement Feel Good Activity

The most frequent time for people to reach for an unhealthy food choice is when they are feeling sad, bored, lonely, angry, or stressed out.

At a BBQ, walk to the opposite side of the house, away from the food table. Out of sight, out of mind.

Do you really want to go through all of that again? You have already put in the hard work and now you feel good about where you are.

Hold onto the feeling and you are going to be less likely to grab something off the dessert table.

8.Remember a Slip up Will Make It Harder

You may have talked yourself into think a small slice of cake for your parent’s anniversary isn’t going to make much of a difference.

Just remember, after eating something with sugar in it one day, the next few days your body is going to be calling for more so it will be even harder to resist.

9.Don’t Use Artificial Sweeteners

Even though artificial sweeteners do not have the same effect on the body as sugar does, your mind reacts the same way when you consume it.

You are tricking yourself into thinking you are going to have a sweet treat, only to have your brain let down by the sweetener. This is only going to make you crave sugar more, so it is best to just avoid it.

10.When All Else Fails, Organic Dark Chocolate

When you cannot kick the feeling that you need to have something sweet, go with an organic dark chocolate for your special snack.

Choose something that is 85% or higher because there is actually not a whole lot of sugar in it. After being on the Paleo diet for a while, this will actually taste very sweet because your body is not use to it.

Dealing with sugar cravings is tough but at some point you have to deal with it if you want a leaner and healthier body.

So before you give into your sugar cravings, try out one, several, or all of these ideas to make them go away.

Every time you consume something with sugar in it, your mind and body are just going to want it more.
